Bright colors and pageantry made up for overcast skies Saturday morning as Cosumnes River Little League celebrated the start of the baseball and softball season at Stonehouse Park. After doing some warm-up candy pitching along the parade route, the 26 teams made a triumphant entry onto the field where Little League President Blake Carmichael welcomed the crowd, thanked the volunteers, and presented $1,000 scholarships to two former players. Paige Callahan, the recipient of the Christina Rodness Scholarship, is a senior at Pleasant Grove High with a 3.96 GPA and a varsity letter in golf. She will attend UC Santa Cruz this fall and plans to be a math teacher. Blake Adams, who received the Christopher Walters Scholarship, is a Jesuit High senior with varsity letters in swimming and water polo, and a track record of leadership and service in his community. He will attend Baylor University, where he hopes to continue his volunteer activities while studying economics and political science. After the scholarship recipients threw the ceremonial first pitches, Tori Davis capped the ceremony with a stirring performance of the national anthem.  Then it was on to a hot dog lunch prepared and served by Kiwanis Club volunteers.
