Ninety-four percent of Murietans responding to a survey say they feel at least somewhat safe in the community. Almost 75 percent of us say we understand Security officers don’t have the power to arrest or investigate, but 48 percent say we expect Security to use deadly force to protect us. And 54 percent say Security officers should have police powers.

Those are some of the results of a survey conducted 13 months ago by Burns & McDonnell, a consultant hired by the Community Services District to help with planning for Security’s future

More than 440 Murietans volunteered to take part, which, Burns & McDonnell reported, means the 33-question survey’s results are accurate to within plus or minus 6 percent.

Generally speaking (with a couple of exceptions), the questions most frequently skipped by participants asked how much more they’d be willing to spend on things – to open Escuela gate, to allow Security to have police powers, for adequate future security, to build a community center. More than 30 participants skipped each of those questions.

Maybe not surprisingly, even more survey participants skipped questions that asked about things that require a certain security expertise – how to arm officers and how to deploy them.

CSD General Manager Mark Martin said Burns & McDonnell offered no interpretation of the results, just the raw numbers.
