This holiday season the Rancho Murieta Association is collecting toys and food for local families in need and Ace Hardware in the Plaza is recycling old holiday lights to help families who have a child with cancer.

The annual Toy and Food Drive sponsored by the RMA and Elk Grove Unified School District Healthy Start Program continues through Dec. 16.

Donations of non-perishable food items and new, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the RMA Building during business hours. The donations go to local families in the Elk Grove Unified School District. For information, call the RMA at 354-3500.

The Lights for Life recycling program began last month at Ace Hardware stores and continues through Feb. 15. Last year,  customers in Northern California donated almost 7 tons of string lights for recycling and the proceeds went to area families who have a child with cancer.

To participate, bring old and broken holiday string lights to Ace Hardware and place them in the recycle lights bin. In addition to helping families during their time of need, the Lights for Life recycling program benefits the environment by keeping lights out of landfills.
