Coat dinner coming up Dec. 9

The coat dinner at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church on Cantova Way is an annual holiday tradition that collects clean, gently used jackets or coats, sleeping bags and blankets for Loaves and Fishes and the Union Gospel Mission to distribute to needy and homeless people. Admission to the dinner is a jacket or coat, and a sleeping bag or blanket is good for two dinners.

This year's dinner takes place Friday, Dec. 9. A no-host bar opens at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Dinner consists of chili, corn bread, salad and dessert.

At last year's dinner, approximately 450 coats, blankets and sleeping bags were collected.

Gathering coats to help the needy

The first fog of the season was gathering outside Friday evening, but inside the social hall of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, people were offering up coats and sleeping bags for the needy at the annual Coat Dinner.  In exchange, the crowd enjoyed a chili dinner, music and socializing.

Community Church offers three nights of holiday entertainment

The last of three December Evenings, the Rancho Murieta Community Church's 11th annual holiday entertainment and hospitality event, took place Saturday night at the church. The event featured a drama, "The Christmas Rewind," and a choir performance of Christmas classics from the musical "God Coming Down," arranged by Travis Cottrell. Santa and tree-lighting mark the start of holiday events on Friday

The holiday season in Rancho Murieta officially begins 6 p.m. Friday with the tree-lighting ceremony at the North Gazebo sponsored by the Optimist Club. Other holiday entertainments scheduled for the following week include the Children's Theater Workshop production of "Twas the Night before Christmas" and December Evenings, the Rancho Murieta Community Church's annual drama and musical event. The second annual Mangia! Mangia! Italian Festival at Lake Clementia started with a bocce ball tournament at the new courts constructed by the Rancho Murieta Association Maintenance Department and concluded with dinner by the lake Sunday. In between, several hundred participants enjoyed a dog parade, a spaghetti sauce contest, a limoncello contest and tasting, a grape stomping event, and lots to mangia, mangia, including Italian ice and other specialties. The event benefits St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church and area organizations.

A bible-school summer trip to Egypt

The Rancho Murieta Community Church was transformed into the Land of the Pharaohs for "Egypt: Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace," the Vacation Bible School program that began Monday morning. Children from preschool through sixth grade take part in songs, games, teamwork and upbeat worship during the week-long program. Participants will also create blankets for Operation Kid-to-Kid. Baptism for girl who's fighting cancer

More than 100 people attended a baptism held by Grace Community Church at Lake Clementia Sunday afternoon. Christina Rodness, a 16-year-old Rancho Murieta girl who is fighting cancer, and her mother, Carmelita Rodness, were among four who were baptized as the crowd sang "Amazing Grace." Boy Scouts complete a project that would have made their father proud

Boy Scouts Gregory Prouty, left, and Ryan Prouty receive congratulations Sunday  from their mother, Theresa Prouty, and Greg Pryor, an official of the Boy Scouts Golden Empire Council, at the dedication of the memorial courtyard they designed and built in honor of their father at St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery.

The new courtyard at St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery in Rancho Murieta is a serene place that welcomes visitors with flowering plants and benches shaded by oaks. It's the work of Troop 633 Boy Scouts Gregory and Ryan Prouty, who embarked on the ambitious project last year to earn the rank of Eagle Scout and to honor their father, who died in 2008. The Rancho Murieta Community Church held a picnic at Stonehouse Park on a breezy Sunday afternoon with something for everyone.
