Fishing Day

Rain didn’t keep 130 young anglers from the Kiwanis Club’s 15th annual Kids’ Fishing Day Sunday. They knew the fish would be biting at Lake Clementia, which was stocked with 700 pounds of trout for the occasion. Fishing Club volunteers like Bob Rohland weighed and cleaned the fish -- that’s the day's fifth catch for seasoned angler Ellyn Welton, 11. A free hot dog lunch prepared and served by Rancho Murieta Kiwanis Club and Key Club volunteers followed a morning of fishing. Fishing Day is co-sponsored by the Fishing Club, Plaza Foods, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and Fisherman's Warehouse. Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel led lessons on the importance of maintaining a good habitat for fish, fishing ethics and casting. Read more » about Youthful anglers learn to work the lake

Opening day

Red square Photo gallery: 98 shots from the parade and ceremonies

It was a week late, but the weather delay was worth it. Cosumnes River Little League celebrated its opening day under a flawless blue sky Saturday. After a parade to Stonehouse Park, more than 300 young baseball and softball players in bright, new uniforms assembled on the field. Boy Scout Troop 633 raised the flag and Gracie Cann sang the national anthem, CRLL President Blake Carmichael introduced the 33 teams, and two former players who are now Pleasant Grove High School graduating seniors were awarded $1,000 scholarships as local aviators flew overhead in a salute. Davis Elgin received the Christopher Walters Scholarship and Lauren Posey received the Christina Rodness Scholarship. River Cats mascot Dinger circulated as the first pitches were thrown out by Sid Williams of Summerfest and scholarship winner Posey. Then everyone headed off for hot dogs and an afternoon of playing ball. Read more » about It's a beautiful day for a ball game
