Deadline is here for memorial bricks at Calero

The deadline to place an order for a memorial brick in time for the Memorial Day flag retirement ceremony at Lake Calero is fast approaching, the Kiwanis Club says.  This is the inaugural year for the installation of bricks to honor or memorialize someone.

The plan is to lay bricks once a year to coincide with the poignant and dignified flag ceremony conducted by local Boy Scout Troop 633. The deadline to submit a form to purchase a brick is the first week of April.

The Kiwanis Club manages the project and the $100-per-brick donation goes through the club's foundation. Funds over and above expenses will be used for improvements to the passive park at Lake Calero, where additional concrete benches and picnic tables are planned. Women's Club lunch

The Rancho Murieta Women's Club enjoyed a performance of late baroque music at its luncheon Wednesday as a trio of musicians played the works of Vivaldi, Bach and other composers on cello, violin and harpsichord to transform the Country Club into an elegant music salon. Musicians Lisa and Michael Lawson of Ione formed the Sacramento Baroque Soloists in 2001, and concerts feature from three to 11 performers playing period-style instruments to capture the vitality of music from bygone centuries. Blood drive

Charlene HessAttendance at Monday's blood drive was the highest in recent years, with 103 registering to donate, drive co-chair Sue Kjome reported Monday evening. The drive is sponsored by the Rancho Murieta Women's Club and conducted by BloodSource four times a year. This drive honored Marine Sgt. Jacob Hess, who was killed in Afghanistan on New Year's Day. Hess was a regular blood donor, and his grandmother, Charlene Hess, right, a longtime Murietan, was among who honored his memory by attending. Donors included Karen Norton of Murieta Village, who has donated 85 pints while a California resident (she also donated when she lived in Michigan) and Yuliza Gomez, 17, of Sloughhouse, who made her second blood donation and received thanks from Kjome and co-chair Sheryl Bray for arriving early and staying on to help as a volunteer.
