About 40 people turned out Tuesday evening for a presentation on the Neighborhood Watch program conducted by the Sacramento Sheriff's Department and hosted by the Rotary Club.

“If you see something suspicious, if you see something weird out there, something that doesn’t feel right, you need to call the Sheriff’s Department, you need to call Security,” said Problem Oriented Policing Officer Mark Kuzmich. He’s with the Sacramento Sheriff's Department, and he was addressing Tuesday’s meeting on the Neighborhood Watch program at the Rancho Murieta Association Building. CSD acts to protect Security officers from lawsuits -- but not expand powers

The Community Services District board of directors voted to grant indemnity from civil lawsuits to patrol officers making a citizen’s arrest, but decided to monitor security operations over the next six months before considering changes in the department’s powers. Other board decisions at Wednesday’s meeting included requiring developers to pay CSD’s legal expenses for negotiating an agreement to provide water and sewer services for new development before resuming negotiations. Burglars use truck to try to yank ATM from Country Store

A truck pulling the cable wrapped around the bottom of the ATM machine wasn't enough to overcome the bolts that hold the ATM to the floor.  (Photos: Rancho Murieta Security)

CSD likely to protect Security officers from lawsuits

Security officers who make a citizen's arrest in the course of doing their jobs are expected to get support from the Rancho Murieta Community Services District board in the form of a policy providing indemnification from civil actions. The Community Services District Security Committee got a preview this week of options the CSD board will consider for the community’s security services. The options are part of the process that began in May when the district’s legal counsel said community services districts don't have police power and can't enact ordinances to regulate personal conduct of citizens.
