There were doubters along the way, but the debut of the Rancho Murieta Association's Casino Night Saturday at the Murieta Inn and Spa had all the earmarks of a long-running hit. The vibe was casual and fun, as the crowd circulated between two rooms, entertaining itself at gaming tables and dancing as servers circulated among the crowd with hors d'oeuvres. Stephanie Bianchi, the RMA director who shepherded the event, said the attendance had topped 150 in the previous 24 hours, and there were people buying tickets at the door. By the RMA's accounting, the event operated thousands of dollars in the black. The night benefits community recreation projects. (Click for larger images)

Dancing

Saturday night's Father-Daughter Dance at Cosumnes River Elementary school had a sock hop theme, which meant poodle skirts, saddle shoes and the like for girls who'd probably never seen such strange garb before. Appropriately attired, and dancing up a storm, were Justin Hayduk and daughter Addison. The theme seemed popular with the dads, who looked like they spent more time dancing than usual before retiring to the sidelines and leaving the dance floor to the girls. But wait – there's more. Read more » Read more » about Dad-Daughter Dance is back to the '50s

Kiwanis Crab Feed

It’s the Kiwanis Club’s mission to serve children, club president Chet Keil said, welcoming a capacity crowd to the club’s annual crab feed fundraiser Saturday night. But on this night, it was the kids doing the serving. Platoons of Key Club members from Pleasant Grove and Sheldon high schools and Rancho Murieta delivered all the elements of the crab feast to the tables that filled the Saint Vincent DePaul Catholic Church social hall. There were also silent auctions, raffles, live music and a bar staffed by the Knights of Columbus. A “wall of fame” featured posters honoring sponsors who had contributed up to $2,000, Keil said.
