Village crafts

Murieta Village jump-started the holiday season Saturday with its annual craft show and bake sale featuring the work of skilled local artisans and offering everything from handmade teddy bears to four-pound bags of shelled walnuts. No one could pass up the homemade treats that transformed the clubhouse library into a bakery, and many took the opportunity to not only shop, but to meet the talented people who crafted the custom cutting boards, holiday decorations, knit scarves and hats, toys and other items that filled the tables.  (Click photo for larger image.) Music Mike

Music Mike charmed children, parents and grandparents with a music- and and dance-filled performance at Lake Clementia Amphitheater Sunday afternoon. The merry adventure began with dozens of children singing along to time-honored favorites like “Bingo” and “Ring Around the Rosie,” then took a madcap turn with a version of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” that featured crawling like snakes, hopping like rabbits and flying like birds.  After “hotdog rolls” down the slopes of the amphitheater, marching with maracas, lots of singing, a geometry lesson with colorful scarves, and some spirited dancing with the folks, it was time to go home, and every child received a lollipop compliments of Music Mike. The Kiwanis Club, which has made the free annual event part of growing up in Rancho Murieta, said about 170 attended the show. Click for larger image. Red Cross auction

Auctioneer David Sobon got the audience reaching for their checkbooks at Thursday night's seventh annual Country Club fundraiser to benefit the Red Cross. There were silent-auction offerings and a number of live-auction items that sounded pretty enticing – getaways to the wine country, rounds of golf on quality courses and seven nights in Hawaii to name a few. After the bidding, Sobon had the crowd writing checks once again – to the tune of more than $20,000 – as he encouraged donations to buy the Red Cross a new Emergency Response Vehicle, to be based in this area to serve disaster victims. The dinner had its solemn moments too, as Murietan Luke Iverson, on video, told them about his brother, Corey, a firefighter who died fighting one of Southern California's fires last year. (You can see Luke Iverson's speech here.) A tournament and lunch Friday wrap up the event. Click photo for larger image. Read more » about Raising money and helping disaster victims

The last Entertainment, Theatre & Culture concert of the season brought about a thousand people to Lake Clementia Amphitheater Saturday night for an epic battle of the bands (and a lot of dancing). The Beatles vs. Rolling Stones tribute featured alternating performances. The Beatles tribute, above, opened with “She Loves You” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and later traveled through time to evoke the group’s final, rooftop concert with “Get Back.” The Rolling Stones tribute, below, revived early hits like “Not Fade Away” and “The Last Time” before launching into golden era classics like “Brown Sugar” and “Jumpin' Jack Flash.” The evening concluded with both bands onstage performing a mash-up of “Day Tripper” and “Satisfaction.” The show opened with a special performance by the young dancers of the Murieta Dance Company and a thank-you to the ETC board, volunteers who stage these shows every summer.
