Residents are donating food, coats and toys this holiday season to those in need. Here’s a list of ways to help. 

Toy and Food Drive: The annual Rancho Murieta Association and Elk Grove Unified School District Toy and Food Drive goes on  through Dec. 15 at the RMA Building. Donations of nonperishable food items and new, unwrapped toys can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.  Donations go to families who live in the school district. Hundreds jammed the North Gazebo Friday night for the arrival of Santa Claus and the annual tree lighting. There were cookies and hot chocolate, holiday songs sung by the Village Voices, and plenty of photo opportunities for families. The event was sponsored by the Optimist Club.

Christmas tree lighting (and Santa) open the holiday season

Rancho Murieta's holiday season gets its official start Friday night with the annual Christmas tree lighting, with Santa himself doing the honors.

Santa will arrive at the North Gazebo at 6 p.m. in a fire truck. Children will be able to sit with Santa and Mrs. Claus while parents take photos. Entertainment will be provided by the Village Voices and young dancers.

Some scary trick-or-treating

Six-year-old Noah Seville was among the little ghosts and goblins -- and Star Wars characters -- who drifted through the streets of Murieta for Halloween. Noah and many kids visited a fundraising haunted house on Verona Drive in the South. The event raised money for the effort to build a skate park.

James Barrow matched moves with deejay Dewey Parker at the dance held before the fireworks show. Parker received so many requests for birthday greetings, it seemed almost everyone at the Gazebo must have been born on the Fourth of July.
