It doesn’t take long to watch the Amgen Tour of California. From this spot, on Latrobe Road about a mile west of Stonehouse Road and Rancho Murieta, it took a little more than a minute Monday afternoon. The first shot is a small group of cyclists, probably a breakaway group grabbing the lead, and then the bulk of the riders, called a peloton, zooms by.
At dusk Thursday, the new North Gate was alight and welcoming us home, and the old gate was a pile of rubble. The gate, standing since Rancho Murieta's beginnings, 40-plus years ago, was demolished in a three-hour tear-down Thursday morning. Its small accompanying walls are scheduled to be demolished Friday. Leon Sobon worked for Stanford, Hewlett-Packard and Lockheed before deciding to become a vintner in the late 1970s. Starting from nothing, he worked with his family to build an Amador County winery into one of the area's largest. Now past 80, Sobon gives back to his community, helping the Kiwanis and other organizations. Meet the man and hear the story of his wine success.
