Former CRES principal dies

A neighbor shares the news that  Michael Sompayrac, known as "Mr. S." when he was principal at Cosumnes River Elementary 15 years ago, has died. Here's the online obituary:

Dr. Michael Howard Sompayrac (1965-2017)

Michael SompayracDr. Michael Sompayrac, aged 52, passed away on October 7, 2017 in Sacramento, California with his family by his side. Michael was a beloved father, son, brother, and educator. Michael was born in Riverside, California on July 23, 1965. He was a 1983 graduate of Riverside Poly High School, where he excelled at basketball and volleyball. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from UC Riverside, where he was president of Kappa Alpha fraternity and studied business. Michael earned his teaching credential and Master's Degree from Cal State San Bernardino prior to earning his Doctorate of Education from the University of La Verne. Mike's passion for education and working with children was evident throughout his career as a Principal. Mr. S. was always a favorite during recesses and lunch, where he would get to interact with the children at his school. He was a lifelong advocate for children's success and strived to make a difference in each of his student's lives. As a leader, Mike inspired his fellow educators to achieve their goals while simultaneously supporting them as a friend. Mike cared deeply about each person, their well-being, and their family. In addition to education, Mike was passionate about family, sports, and great Mexican food! He made everyone laugh with his perfectly timed one-liners. He was known to spend Christmas handing out warm clothing to those who were less fortunate. He had a kind and generous heart. Meeting Mike at Heaven's door was his father, Richard Sompayrac, his uncle, Robert Todd, and his cousin, Jeff Todd. Mike is survived by his mother, Helen Sompayrac, sister, Sandy Nichols (Larry), children, Annie and Tim Sompayrac, nieces, Kristina, Breeanna, and Maddie Mae Knust and Carly Nichols, nephews, Nick Knust and Chris and Greg Milan and his most loved and trusted friend, Susan Sompayrac. A Memorial Service will take place at Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary (7944 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92504) on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the youth-focused charity of your choice.

A family member suggests his children would like to hear from people who knew their father and have stories to share. You can reach them here: Annie and Tim Sompayrac, 4930 H St., Sacramento 95819.

Here's a story we did about Mr. S's departure from CRES in 2002.
