May pole

After participants circled the may pole with ribbons, organizer Pamela Haines worked to wriggle the braided garland from the pole for the participant who won the garland in a drawing. That would be the girl watching intently, Lola Cadwallader, 9, who was visiting from San Pedro and came by with her grandmother, Joanna Walker. The 24-year May Day event, which took place near the North Gate, had trouble getting a young quorum together – first three kids, then four and finally five took part. It was quite an attraction, with slamming car brakes and people drawn by some unseen force to the wheeled wiener, where, we swear, some of them sang Oscar Mayer commercial jingles. (Because you asked, the vehicle is 27 feet long, 11 feet high and weighs seven tons.) At the lunch hour, the Murieta Market by Raley's people, being good hosts, wheeled out a bunch of hotdogs for everyone's enjoyment. At the star attraction they were handing out Wienermobile whistles and postcards. Click photos for larger images Read more » about You wish you were an Oscar Mayer wiener...
