Pera's poppies brighten our spring

Poppies

The weather killed Daffodil Hill's season this year, but who needs Daffodil Hill when we have the Pera Poppies? This explosion of orange, engineered on Pera Drive by Eleanor and Stan Hunter, is a new phenomenon. Only three years ago, the Hunters say, they removed their front lawn and went with a low-water yard, including lots of wildflowers. Eleanor gathered the seeds from her backyard poppies and concentrated the effort out front, leading to this season's glories. (Click photo for larger image.) Fishing Day catch

Gallery of photos from Kids Fishing Day (25 photos)

Seven-year-old Tessa Coleman didn't want to stand too close to the fish she caught, though she was sure she was eating it for dinner. Kiwanis Kids Fishing Day, which happened Saturday after the rain finally stopped, is an annual event that turns Lake Clementia into a classroom so children can put into practice the fishing skills they learn from California Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel and Rancho Murieta Fishing Club volunteers. The lake was stocked with 700 pounds of trout – and 1½ pounds of that total is pictured here. Kiwanis Key Club high school students prepared and served hot dog lunches to the crowd. The Fishing Club says the net holding the fish in the beach part of Lake Clementia will be kept up through the weekend, so have at it, fisherpeople. (Click photo for larger image.) Eggs hatched at eagles' nest? Could be

Eagle nest

EagleNeighbor Paul Anderson (shooter of spectacular nature photos) says he believes the community has had a blessed event. His note Sunday: "Easter eggs aren’t the only eggs getting opened today! Went by the eagle nest this morning. Mama, above, was staring at the newly hatched eaglets.  Dad, solo on branch, was definitely keeping watch in the area! This behavior is very normal when new eggs are hatched.  Could not see any heads, as the babies are very small at this stage!" Easter Egg Hunt

See a photo gallery with 56 more shots from the day

Hundreds of parents, grandparents and children turned out Saturday to enjoy the Kiwanis Club’s annual Easter Egg Hunt and family picnic event at Stonehouse Park. In addition to three age-specific egg hunts, with thousands of treat-filled plastic eggs, there were other activities just made for a warm spring day – a petting zoo, a visit from the Sheriff’s Department Canine Unit, balloon and face art, cookie decorating, eating cotton candy and more. The Murieta Dance Company performed a number from its upcoming show to cap the festivities. (Click photo for larger image.) Read more » about Must be an egg around here somewhere...

Birdman finds a pretty little falcon

Falcon

Bill (Birdman) Gengler checks in with a new photo: "Spotted this new neighbor with double stripes on its face at Lake Clementia this week. It is not a hawk although it looks a lot like one. It is the smallest falcon there is. It is an American Kestral and its call is a shrill killy killy killy. It feeds on insects, reptiles and small mammals. As it is doing in the photo, it often perches on telephone wires before plunging on its prey. Interesting, huh?" Read more » about Birdman finds a pretty little falcon

Eagle on Scott Road

It's good to welcome back Bill (Birdman) Gengler, who shares a note and photos: "Spotted and photographed a bald eagle on Scott Road last week.  Yes, they are still around. Then took a similar and unusual picture of a Rancho Murieta egret not swimming but also sitting on a tree top in Rancho.  For those who are concerned about the absence of rare hawks in Rancho Murieta, took photos of what I believe to be Swainson hawks hanging around the Country Club and the Equestrian Center last week. Keep your eyes on the sky for more of them.  Have a good RM year!  Birdman"

Rudolph

Photo gallery: 36 photos of your neighbors and Santa

Hundreds gathered at Stonehouse Park Friday night to celebrate the start of the holiday season with the traditional visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus and lighting of the community tree. As a special treat, Murieta Dance Company performers dazzled with Christmas numbers, and there were cookies and refreshments for all to enjoy. For year-old Hawk Sumner, a highlight of the celebration was Rudolph’s red nose, a delight he shared with his mother, Marissa, and dad, Chris Sumner. The Optimist Club and the Rancho Murieta Association sponsored the event. (Click photo for a larger image.) Read more » about Giving Rudolph's nose a good squeeze
