Unforgettable morning on Lake Clementia

Eagle fishing

It was a spectacular Sunday morning on Lake Clementia for 9-year-old Jackson Haviland, who was there with his dad, Nic. As captured in this photo by neighbor Paul Anderson, Jackson had a front-row seat as one of our bald eagles did a bit of fishing. Anderson was in another boat and Nic Haviland was on a paddle board. This is one of those times when you really should click the photo to see it at larger size. Read more » about Unforgettable morning on Lake Clementia

Here's how to report wildlife killings

If wild animals are being drowned at Lake Clementia, as a neighbor reports in RanchoMurieta.com’s Forums, the state says it’s a crime. “What you describe is a wildlife crime,” said a spokesperson for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. “If it’s a professional pest control company, for example, doing this, then they’re clearly not following the law. Or some neighbor gone rogue and taking out animals.” Read more » Read more » about Here's how to report wildlife killings

Baby quailIn our big world, it wasn’t much of a crisis or much of a rescue, which probably means it isn’t much of a story. But a handful of Murietans helped rescue a bunch of baby quail from a storm drain late Monday afternoon. Read more » Read more » about Neighbors rescue baby birds from drain

Pera's poppies brighten our spring

Poppies

The weather killed Daffodil Hill's season this year, but who needs Daffodil Hill when we have the Pera Poppies? This explosion of orange, engineered on Pera Drive by Eleanor and Stan Hunter, is a new phenomenon. Only three years ago, the Hunters say, they removed their front lawn and went with a low-water yard, including lots of wildflowers. Eleanor gathered the seeds from her backyard poppies and concentrated the effort out front, leading to this season's glories. (Click photo for larger image.) Domestic bliss, atop a Rancho Murieta tree

EagletPaul Anderson, eagle photographer par excellence, shares photos and this dispatch from Lake Clementia: "Happy to report Rancho Murieta has two large baby eagles in the nest. I was out there late Sunday. The male eagle was standing guard for most of the time I was there.  Mom flew in to the nest and shortly thereafter the male eagle flew away. Literally within two minutes of leaving the nest he flew back into the nest with dinner. I was not able to capture what he caught, but most likely a fish. Now, that’s fast food!" Stepping up to help Murieta's animals

Beth Buderus didn’t ask for this problem, but she’s willing to try to address it, even though she thinks of herself as a behind-the-scenes type – and not really a dog person.  The problem is the Community Services District’s sudden policy change 10 days ago to suspend its practice of handling animal calls. Read more » Read more » about Stepping up to help Murieta's animals
