Lobbyist Keith Ligons dies at 41

A celebration of life will be held for Keith Ligons at the Rancho Murieta Country Club from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Ligons, who lived in Rancho Murieta for about five years, died Oct. 16 at the age of 41. He is survived by his wife, Antonette, and their children, Alisa and Ethan. Longtime Murietan Clara Massman dies at 88

Clara Massman died at home July 22, several days after her 88th birthday. She was surrounded by family members who kept vigil and cared for her during her struggle with cancer. "We tried to give back to her in that brief period of time everything she gave us her whole life," said her daughter Patty St. Pierre. "We weren't ready for her to go, but we are so grateful that we were the ones to help her go. ... She accepted whatever God gave her, never complained about it, never discussed it, and remained a happy, grateful, spiritual person, even through the last four weeks of her life."

Donald Becker, former Murietan, dies at 79

John Mehigan, 30-year Murietan, dies at 76

John Mehigan, a 30-year resident of Rancho Murieta and Country Club member, died suddenly at his home Tuesday at the age of 76.  A service for Mr. Mehigan and celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church on Cantova Way.

Mr. Mehigan made golf a way of life during his years as a Rancho Murieta resident and during a long and productive career in the golf business.  Many enduring friendships began on the golf course and Mr. Mehigan is remembered for his camaraderie and sense of humor as well as his skill as a golfer. Retired educator Roger Corey dies at 70

Roger Corey Sr. earned the respect of generations of students at a Sacramento high school before moving to Rancho Murieta. Former students remember him as “Mr. Corey,” and when they learned of his death from cancer Wednesday at the age of 70, they shared what he meant to them.  “Mr. Corey knew that discipline and boundaries would have to be the saving grace of our generation. ... He was the closest thing to a father that several of my friends will ever know,” Sergio Villarreal posted on ranSACkedMedia.com. Retired firefighter Roy Atkinson dies at 85

A friend says Roy Atkinson Jr. will be remembered in Rancho Murieta as “the old guy with the little red truck.” Mr. Atkinson, who worked as a firefighter in Southern California before moving to Rancho Murieta in 1991, died Wednesday at age 85.

Mr. Atkinson served in the Navy during World War II. He met his wife of 57 years, Patricia McKinney Atkinson, during this time, and they had two sons.

He joined the Los Angeles fire department in 1956 and served 26 years, advancing from firefighter to captain. He later worked as a fire safety officer for several movie studios.

In retirement in Rancho Murieta, Mr. Atkinson enjoyed his dogs, driving around the Gold Country and shopping in Jackson.

24-year Murietan Jim Gouker dies at 66

A family with a deep connection to Rancho Murieta is mourning the loss of Jim Gouker, who died Monday at the age of 66. “Not only did I lose my brother, but we’ve lost a son, a husband, a grandfather, a nephew,” said his sister, longtime Murietan Joanne Brandt. Frank E. Koefelda, a veteran of many fields, dies at 81

Frank KoefeldaFrank Koefelda died at his home in Rancho Murieta on Jan. 26, more than 15 years after he received a diagnosis of  prostate cancer and began years of treatment. He was 81.  It was her husband’s desire to die at home, June Koefelda said. “When we came out here, we fell in love with the place,” she recalled. “We always wanted to be on a lake.” Together they enjoyed sunsets over the water and fireworks on the Fourth of July. Memorial at noon Saturday for Russ Nordeen, 21-year Murietan

Russ Nordeen pursued an active retirement that began with building a home here 21 years ago. He belonged to the Country Club, where he served on committees and was a member of  the Senior Men’s Club. He served as a director of the Rancho Murieta Association in the 1990s, and was a longtime member of the RMA Architectural Review Committee.  Those closest to Mr. Nordeen say his main interest was his family, and his greatest joy came from spending time with them. He was surrounded by his family when he died Nov. 21 at the age of 85.  The Nordeen family would like friends to join them at noon Saturday for a gathering in Mr. Nordeen’s memory at the Rancho Murieta Country Club.
