Lake cleanup

The air was chilly and the shadows long as about 40 volunteers gathered at Lake Clementia Saturday morning for a lake cleanup, sponsored by the Fishing Club, Saving Our Lakes & Open Spaces and the Murieta Trails Stewardship. "I hope all of you plan on getting dirty," Jay Solomon of the Fishing Club told the volunteers as they collected trash bags and debris pickers, which were donated by the Rancho Murieta Association. Solomon told them to work in pairs, take care with their footing and watch for snakes as they split up to work at Clementia, Calero and Chesbro. He had a surprise for each volunteer when the job was done – a coupon from The Backyard in Murieta Plaza for a free entree. (Click for larger image.) Isabella makes a second visit to the vet

Pet chip

The second visit by the Sacramento SPCA pet wellness van to Rancho Murieta on Sunday meant several pet owners in need of the second of a two-part vaccine or a follow-up wellness visit didn’t have to go any farther than the Gazebo parking lot. Technician Lili Rodrigues injects 4-month-old Isabella as she is held close by Robin Kauffman and as another technician tries to distract the dog with a dab of peanut butter. The puppy received her first injections at the Sept. 9 clinic. The Rancho Murieta Association Recreation Committee arranged for two mobile pet wellness clinic visits to provide microchipping to make it easier to find lost pets. Staffed by a veterinarian and several technicians, the clinic also provided vaccines, flea and tick control, and vouchers for spay and neuter. Nine dogs and two cats were treated, compared to 23 pets at the first clinic. Click for larger image. Read more » about Isabella makes a second visit to the vet

Red Cross auction

→ Photo gallery (10 photos from the event)

Auctioneer David Sobon got the audience reaching for their checkbooks at Thursday night's seventh annual Country Club fundraiser to benefit the Red Cross. There were silent-auction offerings and a number of live-auction items that sounded pretty enticing – getaways to the wine country, rounds of golf on quality courses and seven nights in Hawaii to name a few. After the bidding, Sobon had the crowd writing checks once again – to the tune of more than $20,000 – as he encouraged donations to buy the Red Cross a new Emergency Response Vehicle, to be based in this area to serve disaster victims. The dinner had its solemn moments too, as Murietan Luke Iverson, on video, told them about his brother, Corey, a firefighter who died fighting one of Southern California's fires last year. (You can see Luke Iverson's speech here.) A tournament and lunch Friday wrap up the event. Click photo for larger image. Read more » about Raising money and helping disaster victims
