Bill Nichelmann, avid golfer and longtime Murietan, dies at 78

Friends say Will "Bill" Nichelmann combined a gruff exterior with a kind heart that responded to those in need, especially children.

At Christmas, he bought presents for children who might not otherwise have any. On the Fourth of July, he decorated his golf cart, gathered up his beloved dogs -- Rumor, Sophie and Nelson -- and was part of the parade down the parkway.

During the time she coordinated the event for the Community Club, Virginia Nichelmann, his wife of 22 years, rode in the fire truck leading the parade. 

Mr. Nichelmann was an avid golfer whose life came to an end after he was stricken by a heart attack Saturday and collapsed on the driving range at the Country Club. He was 78. Read more » about Bill Nichelmann, avid golfer and longtime Murietan, dies at 78

Rancho Murieta's newest Eagle Scouts are, from left, Robert Meyer, Blake Hurdle, Matt Kalmanson and Drew Moore. The Troop 633 Scouts were honored at the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony Sunday afternoon at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church's social hall, attended by about 175 people. Bagpiper Steve McKinney played "America the Beautiful" to user in the solemn ceremony honoring the scouts, their parents, mentors, troop leader Mori Graf and former troop leader David Scharlach.

After 35 years, librarian is parking her bookmobile

The Wanderer Bookmobile will continue to dock at Murieta Village, but librarian Linda G. Howe will no longer be at the helm. After 35 years with the Sacramento County library system, most of them spent as the operator of a rolling library, Howe retires at the end of the month. With a Trash 'n' Treasure event at the Plaza and another at Murieta Village, Saturday was made for shoppers of all ages. At the Plaza, Anna Maloney, 8, selected jewelry with her mother. The annual yard sale events provided a wide range of goods for treasure seekers as well as a fundraising opportunity for community groups.

As a bagpiper played the anthems of the armed services and "Amazing Grace,"  a dozen scouts from Scout Troop 633 conducted a solemn ceremony at sunset Monday to retire the community's tattered flags and honor those who have served their country and sacrificed their lives.
