Macey's coats

For the second year, Murietan Macey Casagrande collected jackets and distributed them to the homeless in Sacramento on Thanksgiving weekend. The 11-year-old set up shop Saturday at Loaves and Fishes, with almost 600 coats and jackets hanging neatly for the needy to try on and take, many more coats than she had last year. Her parents, Sean and Tammi Casagrande, were there to help out. Also on hand was “Good Day Sacramento,” and you can see the show’s video here. Photo by Justin Hayduk. (Click photo for larger image.) Photo gallery: 36 photos of your neighbors and Santa

Hundreds gathered at Stonehouse Park Friday night to celebrate the start of the holiday season with the traditional visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus and lighting of the community tree. As a special treat, Murieta Dance Company performers dazzled with Christmas numbers, and there were cookies and refreshments for all to enjoy. For year-old Hawk Sumner, a highlight of the celebration was Rudolph’s red nose, a delight he shared with his mother, Marissa, and dad, Chris Sumner. The Optimist Club and the Rancho Murieta Association sponsored the event. (Click photo for a larger image.) Read more » about Giving Rudolph's nose a good squeeze

Robin

EagleWe've certainly got talented neighbors. Here are photos shot Sunday by Paul Anderson and Thomas Eaton. Paul got shots of backyard birds amidst the beautiful fall foliage, like this robin making off with a berry. Tom offers this season's first shots of Murieta's resident bald eagles, shots taken at Lake Clementia. There are more photos from each on the next page. (Click photos for larger images.) Your neighbors: Meet Luke, Good Samaritan

Luke Iverson and family

You saw the post the other day, the one where Mary Kolbe wrote about the Good Samaritan who helped when her car broke down at Jackson Road and the North Gate? The good neighbor drove home to the South, got tools, and addressed her car’s problem. She wanted to thank him, but she only knew his name as Luke. Well, meet Luke and Tara Iverson and their kids, Harper, 4; Hayden, 2; and Hudson, 9 months. They’ve lived in Murieta for a year. Luke, who’s an accountant with Aerojet, says he usually has repair tools in the car, and this wasn’t his first roadside rescue. He explained, “I would hope at some point in time in my life that, if I get stuck, in a situation where I can’t physically do it myself, that someone would stop for me as well.” He added, “Not that it’s a religious thing, but I happen to be a Christian, and so the opportunity to help a fellow either resident, neighbor – you never know when you’re going to have the opportunity to impact somebody’s life.” (Photo supplied by Iverson family) Read more » about Your neighbors: Meet Luke, Good Samaritan

Murieta responds to the fire victims

Tony Avampato

TruckloadTony Avampato works at dinnertime Thursday, building the day's second pile of items heading to the Wine Country fire victims. He said it had been a good day. Avampato got it started by placing a classified ad at RM.com, asking Murieta to help. Lots of our neighbors responded, contributing clothing, food, personal hygiene items, sleeping bags, comforters and pet supplies. He said he had learned about streets all over Murieta North and South. "It was a great response. It really was," he said as he headed out to make the final pickups of this week's collection. Earlier in the day, a truck picked up the first load, at right. Avampato is part of McCollister's Transportation Group. A driver with the company is taking a truck full of relief items to the Bay Area. Avampato said there may be a followup effort to collect more items in a couple of weeks.
