Taking a step to address the problem of midge flies at Laguna Joaquin, the Rancho Murieta Association board Tuesday night approved the purchase of five pumps, for $31,368, to oxygenate the water, despite concerns that it's doing the work of the Community Services District. Fun run and environmental fair at Calero

The Saving Our Lakes & Open Spaces Halloween fun run/walk and environmental fair took place Saturday morning at Lake Calero. The two-mile trip around our drinking-water lake provided a look at water levels and areas where development is planned. Tables staffed by SOLOS volunteers offered maps showing Sacramento County plans for future development along Highway 16, as well as information on Rancho Murieta’s environment and local development plans. County meeting about Kiefer Landfill Monday

The county will hold a community meeting about the Kiefer Landfill 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District #58, 7250 Sloughhouse Road. The meeting will focus on proposed use of buffer lands around Kiefer Landfill, which is on  Kiefer Boulevard in Sloughhouse, about six miles from Rancho Murieta. There’s a summary of the plans here. The planning area was the subject of an environmental review and community meetings in 2012 and 2013. County representatives will be on hand for Monday’s meeting. Hazardous waste collected at RM event

There was no waiting for the steady stream of vehicles bringing paint, fluorescent bulbs, pool chemicals and other items to the Rancho Murieta Community Services District's household hazardous waste event Saturday morning at the FAA parking lot on Cantova Way. After CSD personnel checked residents in, vehicles were unloaded by hazardous waste technicians. Hold on to those old TVs and computers -- electronic waste was not accepted Saturday, but CSD plans curb-side e-waste collection early next month. Deer Creek Hills bike tour June 27

The Sacramento Valley Conservancy is holding its first mountain bike tour of Deer Creek Hills Saturday, June 27, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mountain bike docents will escort riders on single track, cattle paths and ranch roads.

Deer Creek Hills is a blue oak and grasslands preserve of over 4,000 acres adjacent to Rancho Murieta. The pastureland serves as a working cattle ranch from November through May, and the cattle have proven to be superb designers for single track trails that are suitable for beginners and families, according to the conservancy.
