Flag retirement

Boy Scout Troop 633 retired about 150 American flags with care and dignity at sunset Monday on the banks of Lake Calero in what has become a Memorial Day tradition for the community. The Boy Scouts gently lowered the tattered flags into the flames accompanied by the melancholy refrains of bagpipe music played by Chuck Jamison, a retired Army captain. The ceremony honors the flag and its history, and remembers those who lost their lives in the service of our country. Read more » about Scouts retire flags in Memorial Day ceremony

Easter Egg Hunt

Red square Photo gallery: 60 shots from the Easter Egg Hunt

Eleven-month-old Brigg Dennis enjoyed his first Easter at Stonehouse Park Saturday as hundreds gathered for the annual Kiwanis Club Picnic and Easter Egg Hunt. Brigg and his parents, Danica and Heath Dennis, moved to Rancho Murieta only two weeks ago, just in time to enjoy a community celebration designed to delight the youngest residents with cookie decorating, face-painting, crafts, a petting zoo, a visit with the Easter Bunny, a dance troupe, visits by the fire department and Sacramento sheriff’s canine unit, and the gathering of 7,000 brightly colored, candy- and prize-filled eggs. In addition to dozens of photos, linked above, we've got a video look at the day below.

Brownies on porch

Photos and a note from neighbor Bill Gengler: "The young ladies of Rancho Murieta's Brownie Troop 2691, with their leader Ellie Hansen, spent two hours singing songs like 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' as they traveled around Rancho Murieta to visit holiday displays in the community. Happily these pictures of the very talented group were taken on my porch and lawn. Thanks for stopping by, Troopers. Have a Rancho Murieta day." Coat dinner

Red square Gallery: 35 photos of the Coat Dinner and volunteers at work

The annual Coat Dinner, where the price of admission is a warm coat or a sleeping bag, filled the social hall of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church Friday evening. While some volunteers collected and bagged scores of coats, others prepared and served a homemade chili dinner that was enjoyed in fellowship and the spirit of the season. The bounty of warm items -- coats, sleeping bags, blankets, scarves, gloves and hats -- benefits the Loaves and Fishes and Union Gospel Mission programs for the homeless. Santa and crowd

Red square Photo gallery: 30 photos of Santa and the crowd

Right on schedule, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus arrived at the Gazebo Friday evening in a fire truck with flashing red lights for the traditional start of the holiday season in Rancho Murieta.  They were welcomed by a crowd who'd spent the wait enjoying holiday songs sung by a trio of young carolers and cookies and hot chocolate served by Optimist Club volunteers. In short order, Santa lighted the big tree at the North entrance and decorations across the highway on Gazebo Hill and then settled in to visit with the boys and girls as parents and grandparents captured memories on cell phones and cameras. Turkey Trot

The turnout for the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot was the best yet, and the 5K run, with a new route, raised more than $1,200 for the Fisher House Foundation, according to event organizer Deb Craig, who shared this photo.  She adds, "Huge thank yous to Charlotte Dubey (who started and is responsible for this whole thing every year), Stacy Garza, Heather Davis and Stacy Reece (who mapped out the new course!) and Monica McAuliffe."  Deb adds something you already know: "We live in the best community!"
